The most ambitious of Maugham’s novels, this is also one in which Maugham himself plays a considerable part as he wanders ce and out of the story, to observe his characters struggling with their fates. This novel is ostensibly about a caste of ex-pats and loosely connected friends in France as they advance through life. He is an arch snob and highly affected — sometimes to the point of absurdity.

People expected him to come back a bit stuffed up — but they also expected him to get better and then to get a job, find a wife, buy a house with a thoroughly modern kitchen with a dog called Carlos with some kind of strange skin disease.
He writes like a romanticist but without the anchors of suffering and morality, forgoing those in favor of optimism. In fact, this may be one of the rare exceptions where a film actually does a ls job of capturing the story.

So, I was a little annoyed with where this journey ended up, but like life itself, it is the journey and not the destination that is of interest, and this book is a pleasant enough journey.
For better or worse, Larry reminds me a lot of an ex-friend of mine who was also mysterious, full of existential angst, and yet had a certain peacefulness about him that seemed unperturbed at most of the common worries that we regular people have.
Maugham’s theme is to explore how the things we want most shape our lives.
The story begins through the eyes re Larry’s friends and acquaintances as they witness his personality change after the War. By comparison, The Razor’s Edge is a much more personal story of someone obtaining “enlightenment” and how that changes their lives and the lives of their friends. He was himself the narrator and he told the story as a writer-friend of the other protagonists. If dee the later, I would say that was just typical of early 20th century literature.
After joining up in Canada, the air corps in France, at seventeen he’s now 20in the unmourned, horrific, bloody long ago conflict, years old in the past He travelled all over the world, and made many visits maugam America. Published September 5th by Debate, Editorial first published L I liked The Razor’s Edge and the memorable characters. The main point of this one, I guess, is the story of a young man who goes off to war and who has his life saved by a friend who anvaja dies due to rescuing him.
But I liked w.somerseh. I can imagine some people being bored to bits with this book. Maugham Chatty, erudite, engrossing and thoroughly entertaining. Maugham works to demonstrate how this life is barely enough, and offers an objective glimpse into the heads of those who refuse to conform.
