Abnett finally hits his stride in the series in this book. The Vervun Primary embraces the offer, with the overwhelming number of them choosing to enlist in the Tanith ranks – their necroplois new recruits since their Founding. Honour Guard Gaunt’s Ghosts. See all 19 reviews. The scope of the book is huge, but by combining myriad vignettes and smaller set-pieces with the overarching narrative of the siege Abnett gives us the best of both worlds and makes the whole picture understandable and believable.
Abnett also makes some interesting points here about the sheer wastefulness of war, particularly in the maudlin ending, which is unusual in a military SF novel. As enemy psykers work hard to remove the mind-lock, the Imperial forces move quickly to stop Sturm jeopardising the entire Sabbat Worlds Crusade. The story has a different feel than the previous books, with Abnett focusing in on a single major event and including a lot of side characters, each with their own desperate situations.
On Phantine, a number of Ghosts took part in “Operation Larisel”, an airborne operation that deployed specially selected fire teams into Ouranberg to seek out and assassinate Sagittar Slaith, the Chaos warlord in command of the Blood Pact forces holding the city.
