Although I had, several years ago, read the first half and then abandoned the exercise, leaving me to start all over again with my good intentions, it was noticeable that I had stopped just before the book became more interesting, when Fadette appears on the scene, for it had not been very exciting up to the first half.

The story has a conventional happy ending, but there are darker aspects of the story that are usually glossed over, one instance being Fanchon’s giving up of her independence, another being the frustrated outcome of Sylvain’s life.

The conflict occurs when Landry gradually gets to know Fanchon and realizes that she is not the wild girl who is teased as being a sorceress, wearing rough clothing and acting decidedly unfeminine. The children are known as “witches” and indeed often appear unkempt, covered in dirt, and at one with the elements.

After Landry and Fadette are married, Sylvinet enlists in the army and leaves the provinces.

Her ideas on morals have the same depth of judgment and delicacy of feeling as those of janitresses and kept women Tourgueniev, George Eliot, Dostoevsky deeply admired her. Some time after, Landry decides to leave since, due to Sylvinet’s increasing pa and depression toward him, the twins’ relationship has begun to fracture. This book may have occasional imperfections such as missing or blurred pages, poor pictures, errant marks, etc.
