Some cover years — large chunks of history or a person’s lifetime — while others describe only a scene or few moments. It’s a small criticism of a brilliant work, but one I make to point out that in the end Centuria is more stimulating than entertaining, and I think it could have been both. In any event, “Centuria” provides uncategorizable reasons to experience and celebrate an immeasurably wonderful writer. Manganelli writes with great precision, and these stories are crafted like those by Borges or Monterroso, the wild imaginings contrasting with the exacting style.
