In a way, it’s tainted my perception somewhat of picture-perfect Bali. I think if the author had focused more on explaining the individual prisoners personal stories hotwl would have made for a more structured read, rather than jumping back and forth to various topics.
While reading the book I felt like I was in the cell with these people.

It exposes the jail’s role in supplying high-grade drugs to the outside, the gang that rules the jail through terror, the corruption that means anything is for sale, and the squalor and misery endured by prisoners. I rarely write reviews but felt compelled to spread the hotell about this book.
You would not be able to tell if the infamous Balinese jail was a keribokan idea of heaven or hell. Hardened drug traffickers sleep alongside unlucky tourists, who’ve seen their holiday turn from paradise to hell over an ecstasy tablet.

It is obviously well researched with many prisoners giving their stories as well as local Indonesian newspaper quotes confirming everything that goes on from the rampant sex and drugs to the corruption.

The author really did her homework and became so close to the inmates, and came away with an incredible account of hltel it means to be locked up in Hotel k.
Kathryn Bonella is an excellent author. Any author has a huge challenge to get me to enjoy their book. This book is a kerobokzn eye opener to the corrupt jail system in Bali where hard criminals seemed to be rewarded for their crimes within the jail getting many luxuries and important duties within the jail.
