I’m a huge fan of LeFanu’s classic ghost stories, and it was a revelation to me that he could sustain such a pitch of suspense over an entire novel.
Maud, an heiress, falls under the power of her uncle Silas after her father’s death–this is a man she’s never known, who was accused of murder as a young man but who appears to have reformed and found religion. Not all loose ends were tied together satsfactorily, such as what was Madame’s connection with Dudley and Silas Ruthyn? Le Fanu relies on mood and atmosphere to get the job done. It’s also a still-readable tale of creeping dread as a sickly house guest drains the life out of the daughter of a family she has been palmed off on.
