The main character in The COnformist is not hateful, but does despicable things. Nevertheless a remarkable book, which will turn my head around when I go to sleep tonight. But then he is assigned to kill his former professor, now exiled in France, to demonstrate his loyalty to the Fascist state, and falls in love with a strange, compelling woman; his life is torn open – and with it the corrupt heart of Fascism.

By the time we meet him 17 years later, he is “perfectly sure of himself, entirely masculine in his tastes and in his general attitude, calm, methodical to a fault, almost completely lacking in imagination, cool and self-controlled, reserved, always equable in temper, lacking in vivacity if not actually gloomy, silent, a sort of benumbed, grey normality”. Moravia has a way of writing scenes that stick with you for a long time, as I am sure will be the case with this.

Most of the chapters ended with a door closing or someone leaving conformisra space for another. I generally feel a film is a success if it sends one back to the source material; in this instance, I feel as though I may be going back and forth for a while as I ponder Moravia’s question of what “normal” means.

Alberto Moravia, born Alberto Pincherle, was one of the leading Italian novelists of the twentieth century whose novels explore matters of modern sexuality, social alienation, and existentialism. Moravia born Alberto Pincherle is in my opinion one of the great novelists of the 20th century and The Conformist is representative of his best work. While Alberho and Giulia head out shopping, Marcello is accosted by an old man who first mistakes him for a beggar, and then mistakes him for a homosexual or perhaps a prostitute, revisiting the humiliation of the incident with Lino on Marcello.
